Confederate Bullet | Enfield Rifle

Confederate Bullet | Enfield Rifle

History of the Artifact

When theĀ Civil War began, both sides were fairly unprepared for a scenario of total war requiring large numbers of conscripted soldiers, sophisticated logistics, and most importantly, war armaments. The confederate as well as the federal armies had not enough weapons to equip entire armies. The South, lacking the industrial capabilities to produce large scale weapon manufacturing operations began importing large quantities of weapons, namely the Enfield .577 Calibre Rifled Musket.Ā

The gun was often favored by soldiers in close combat and skirmishes given its greater accuracy in short distances than other popular rifles during the war. The English produced Enfield ended up becoming the 2nd most common weapon used in the American Civil War, second only to the Springfield Musket (Who's factory is still visitable to this day in Springfield, MA!)

The bullets used on this rifle were made of lead and cone-shaped with some slight variations at the base, with some being striped or chiseled to improve accuracy and aerodynamics. Large and heavier than bullets used in both World War 1 and 2, they were slower and less accurate than their more modern counterparts, however, they were designed to inflict terrible wounds by shattering rather than cleanly breaking the bones often resulting in the amputation of the soldier's wounded limb.Ā

How do I know these are original confederate bullets?Ā
