History of the Artifact
This silver denarius was struck in Rome in 90 BC by the moneyer Quintus Titius during a turbulent phase of the late Roman Republic marked by the Social War and rising political instability. The obverse depicts the youthful head of Bacchus, also identified with Liber in Roman tradition, crowned with an ivy wreath associated with wine, ritual ecstasy, fertility, and liberation. The choice of this deity may reflect both religious symbolism and family associations, as Republican moneyers frequently selected imagery intended to evoke ancestral prestige or moral qualities connected to their lineage.
The reverse shows Pegasus springing right above the inscription naming the issuer, creating a striking contrast between divine inspiration and controlled energy. Pegasus, the mythical winged horse of Greek tradition, was associated with poetic inspiration, speed, and heroic myth, and his appearance on Roman coinage reflects the Republicâs deep absorption of Hellenistic artistic and cultural themes during the first century BC. The composition is unusually elegant for Republican coinage of the period, balancing the serene portrait of Bacchus with the dynamic movement of Pegasus. Today, this type is studied for its refined iconography and for how late Republican moneyers used mythological imagery not simply for decoration, but as a sophisticated form of personal and political expression.
